Moon Sweepers Save Backups: Location, Timing, and Limits

Where Moon Sweepers stores up to five automatic backups on Windows, how often they're made, and what recovery and version limits apply in 1.0.4 saves.

Moon Sweepers added automatic save backups in the 1.0.4 patch. On Windows, they're stored outside Steam Cloud at:

C:\Users\[user-name]\AppData\LocalLow\DragDropGames\MoonSweepers\Backups

Replace [user-name] with your own Windows account folder name. This is the backups folder the developer announced; it isn't necessarily the only place the game keeps save data.

How often backups are made

Each save slot keeps up to five full backups of your world. According to the 1.0.4 patch notes, a backup is taken one minute into every session, then every 30 minutes after that. The announcement does not specify the exact backup rotation policy.

How recovery works

The developer describes two automatic behaviors:

  • On load: when a save, or just a section of it, turns out to be damaged, the game pulls the data back from your backups while the world loads and notifies you.
  • After a crash: the next launch scans your save files and fixes any that were damaged.

These are the developer's stated features, not a guarantee that every damaged save will be recovered. The 1.0.3 notes also say saves are checked before they replace the previous one, and that a message appears whenever a repair was needed.

Version limits

Saves created in 1.0.4 will not open in older versions of Moon Sweepers. If you need an older build, don't expect a 1.0.4 world to load there.

The 1.0.5 notes (October 28, 2026) do not mention any change to backups or to this version limit, and they do not say whether 1.0.5 saves open in 1.0.4. They do list a fix for a freeze that hit roughly 30 seconds after some worlds finished loading. Check the official announcements for anything newer.

Practical notes

  • Do not assume Steam Cloud includes these automatic backups: the developer places them outside Steam Cloud.
  • For multiplayer context, see shared upgrades; for robot changes in the same update, see the J.O.O.N.A.S. guide.
  • If a save won't load or recovery doesn't happen, report it through the developer's Discord, as the patch notes ask.
